I’ve got some thoughts on Jim Starling’s name (like you talk about at 29:00)
Mild spoilers for a future episode…. but I’ll be careful not to give away too much…
My immediate thought was—like you say–“Starling” is a reference to Sterling Holloway. While Jim Cummings worked with Paul Winchell for years, and they shared the role of Tigger for a while, he never met Sterling Holloway… BUT one time, years before he auditioned for the role of Winnie the Pooh, Cummings recognized Holloway in a restaurant, but was too excited or intimidated to actually go up and talk to him. So there’s that idea of being so starstruck at the opportunity to meet a celebrity that you miss your chance—like with Launchpad in the future episode feat. Jim Starling.
I sent Frank Angones’ Tumblr a message asking if Starling=Sterling… and he never responded to it. And he responds to a LOT of inquiries on Tumblr. So I thought… maybe that’s incorrect?
So I had another idea: Starling = star (a celebrity) + -ling (diminutive suffix) = not as much of a star as he thinks he should be. I sent that theory to Frank’s Tumblr as well. No answer.
So then I thought… maybe it’s a reference to the starling, the actual bird? That was introduced into North America (by Eugene Schieffelin) in the hopes that it would be poetic, but starlings in America turned out to be noisy, voracious eaters of crops, carriers of disease, generally disruptive?
I never did hear back from Frank Angones, so can’t confirm any of these name derivation theories. But I love that you talked about it in this podcast.
